Originally
developed by Robert Kaplan and David Norton in the early 1990s,
the Balanced Scorecard was designed to help businesses more effectively
implement their strategic plans. Fundamentally, The Balanced Scorecard
is both a framework and a tool that helps a company align its business
activities with its strategy. As well, it presents executive leaders
with the means to ensure successful strategy implementation.
While many companies today continue to focus heavily on traditional
planning processes that are mainly financially focused, the Balanced
Scorecard ensures that, in addition to the financial perspective,
other perspectives are considered. Attention to such factors as
internal processes, customer satisfaction, and employee learning
and development provide a more "balanced" path to understanding
the core dynamics driving your business.
