The Client
Triche Hauling & Materials is a (US) $3.2 m first generation trucking
company with a reputation for providing dependable, high quality
service. This family-owned business is majority owned and managed
by a husband and wife team, along with their two sons.
The Challenge
Increasing demand for Triche Hauling & Materials' services had provided
the company an opportunity for significant growth. At the same time,
there was an increasing awareness that the company's operations
were experiencing quality issues (e.g., increase in the number of
late deliveries, increase in the number of customer complaints)
that had not occurred previously. Also, family relationships were
becoming more stressful at an accelerated rate (e.g., relationships
between family members involved in the business were deteriorating
as family tensions during and outside of work were intensifying).
The Solution
SBS Partners recommended a Family Business Collaboration Assessment.
The assessment evaluated the business through both the family and
business sides. Through a process of interviews, gathering data,
and exploring business and family dynamics (see Systems Map below),
an assessment of family and business functioning was provided -
with short-, intermediate-, and long-term recommendations.
Understanding the System & Dynamics
A "Do Whatever It Takes Attitude," was the initial catalyst and
the driving force for the success of Triche Hauling & Materials
as a recognized trucking and hauling leader (R1). Unintended consequences,
however, were now threatening both the functioning of the family
(B1, B2) and the functioning of the business (B3, B4).
The Benefits
The family members and leaders of the business have developed a
better understanding of how the family system was driving business
behavior and having a negative impact on family relationships. With
this new systems insight, along with recommendations from SBS Partners,
the family business has developed strategies to improve business
performance while enhancing family relationships. The stress on
the family has become more manageable, quality issues are being
addressed, and the company is now pursuing a new growth strategy.
